Phase diagram of patchy colloids: towards empty liquids.

چکیده
We report theoretical and numerical evaluations of the phase diagram for patchy colloidal particles of new generation. We show that the reduction of the number of bonded nearest neighbors offers the possibility of generating liquid states (i.e., states with temperature T lower than the liquid-gas critical temperature) with a vanishing occupied packing fraction (phi), a case which can not be realized with spherically interacting particles. Theoretical results suggest that such reduction is accompanied by an increase of the region of stability of the liquid phase in the (T-phi) plane, possibly favoring the establishment of homogeneous disordered materials at small phi, i.e., stable equilibrium gels.

Observation of empty liquids and equilibrium gels in a colloidal clay.
The relevance of anisotropic interactions in colloidal systems has recently emerged in the context of the rational design of new soft materials. Patchy colloids of different shapes, patterns and functionalities are considered the new building blocks of a bottom-up approach toward the realization of self-assembled bulk materials with predefined properties. The ability to tune the interaction ani...
متن کاملGrafted nanoparticles as soft patchy colloids: self-assembly versus phase separation.
We investigate the thermodynamic behavior of a model polymer-grafted nanoparticle (GNP) system on a fine lattice, using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, to compare and contrast the validity of two different models for GNPs: "nanoparticle amphiphiles" versus "patchy particles." In the former model, continuous self-assembly processes are expected to dominate the system, whereas the latter...
متن کاملGel-forming patchy colloids and network glass formers: Thermodynamic and Dynamic analogies
This article discusses recent attempts to provide a deeper understanding of the thermoreversible ”gel” state of colloidal matter and to unravel the analogies between gels at the colloidal level and gels at the molecular level, commonly known as network-forming strong liquids. The connection between gel-forming patchy colloids and strong liquids is provided by the limited valence of the inter-pa...
متن کاملTheoretical calculations of phase diagrams and self-assembly in patchy colloids
In this work we discuss the main theoretical and numerical methodologies thathave been envisaged over the years to tackle the computation of the phase di-agrams and phase transitions from one phase to another in dispersions of new-generation colloids, i.e., particles interacting via non-spherical potentials. Specif-ically we focus on patchy particles with different philiciti...
متن کاملInverse patchy colloids with small patches: fluid structure and dynamical slowing down.
Inverse patchy colloids (IPCs) differ from conventional patchy particles because their patches repel (rather than attract) each other and attract (rather than repel) the part of the colloidal surface that is free of patches. These particular features occur, e.g. in heterogeneously charged colloidal systems. Here we consider overall neutral IPCs carrying two, relatively small, polar patches. Pre...
